Anxious Love: When you love hard and spiral harder

6 copy-paste scripts · by Maya Brooks

Word-for-word scripts for asking for reassurance, saying you feel anxious, and asking for space — without apologizing for having needs.

Okay, real talk: I've sat on the floor of my Seattle apartment at 1am, phone in my hand, heart beating out of my chest, writing and rewriting "are we okay?" five different ways. The spiral is not a character flaw. The hard part was never the feeling — it was finding words for it that didn't come out as an apology or an accusation.

This library is for asking for reassurance without shrinking. Sentences for when you need to know where you stand, when your head won't stop replaying a conversation, when you want to say "I got scared" without handing over the whole spiral.

Each script names one need and one boundary, because that's what makes people able to actually answer you. I know some of them feel scary to send (I still take a breath first). Send it anyway. Then let the answer come instead of guessing at it for another hour.

Questions I get about anxious love

Is it needy to ask for reassurance?
No. Asking once, clearly, is not neediness — it's information. What tends to feel heavy is asking sideways, over and over, and hoping he guesses.
What do I say when I'm spiraling and don't know what I need?
Say exactly that: "my head's loud tonight, I don't need you to fix it, I just want to hear you're here." Naming it small keeps it from becoming a whole fight.
How do I stop rereading old messages?
Close the thread and write the thing you actually want to know in one sentence. Rereading is a way of asking without asking — and it never answers you.
