How to Tell Your Partner You Don't Want to Share Location 24/7

By Maya Brooks · Updated 2026-09-21 · 4 min read

Quick answer

Make it about autonomy, not secrecy. Try: “I love sharing when we’re meeting up, but 24/7 location makes me feel on edge. Can we share only when we’re headed to each other, and text otherwise? I want to feel trusted.”

Three scripts you can copy

Pick the one that sounds most like you. Change a word if you need to, then send it.

Script 1Soft & Honest
“I feel on edge with 24/7 location on. I want us to trust each other without tracking. Could we only share when we’re on the way?”
Script 2Boundaried
“I’m not comfortable with always-on location. I’m happy to text when I’m heading somewhere, but I want to keep that boundary.”
Script 3Playful
“my phone already knows too much about me haha. Can we do location only for meetups, not all day?”

Why this works

You’re naming the feeling — on edge — not accusing him of being controlling. Feelings are easier to hear.

I had this talk in my Seattle living room, both of us looking at our phones. Saying “on the way only” felt specific and doable, and we both exhaled.

Offering an alternative — text when heading out — shows you’re still considerate, just not tracked.

If he gets defensive when you set a boundary, use this script.

What not to say

  • “If you trusted me you wouldn’t need my location.” — true, but it lands as an attack.
  • Turning it off without talking about it.
  • “Everyone thinks it’s controlling.”
  • A long list of articles about surveillance.

FAQ

Is it a red flag if he insists?

Needing to know where you are at all times is more about anxiety or control than love. Notice how he handles the no.

What about safety?

Safety sharing can be temporary: “Share for tonight’s drive” is different from 24/7.

What if I shared before and want to stop?

You can change your mind. “I tried it and realized it makes me anxious, so I want to change it” is enough.
